(this was not proofread, and isn’t meant to be funny. It’s just a quick reflection on my year.)
In January my wonderful wife Stacie Ellickson-Hastie & I went on a cruise to Cancun, Belize & the Isle of Roatan, where we watched our friends Melissa & Steve get married.
In February, I made a weird short film with my friend Michael & my parents came up & visited for a weekend.
In March, Tim & I started on the daunting task of shooting a crazy short film (and maybe someday we’ll finish it).
In April, Stacie & I went to an amazing Frontier Ruckus concert in Omaha with Nick & Megan where we got to meet the guys and actually talk to them for awhile & later that month I started doing stand up open mics around Des Moines.
In May, Stacie, Murphy (or dog) & I took an impromptu weekend drive that lead us to Dubuque, New Glarius & Madison.
In June we drove out to Pennsylvania/Maryland to see Stacie’s cousin Lori get married & got to explore Philadelphia with my mother in law & brother in law.
July was a big month, I started “The Tolstoi Made Shoes Podcast”, celebrated my 1 year wedding anniversary with Stacie, I got to do my first open mic on stage at a real comedy club & helped write & act in a short film for the 48 Hour Film Festival.
In August my Mother in law came to town and we all went to the State Fair for the first time & I got to see the awesome pavilion thing that Stacie designed. It was beautiful, she really is an artist!
September brought the annual trip to the Amana’s for the Iowa Beer Festival with Schenck, Melissa, Nick, Megan, Jj, Michelle & my brother in law Jim. I, of course, drank to much & then later that month Luke & I formed the band Rock Bottom Rebellion.
In October we went to Iowa City where JJ & Michelle got married. It was a great reception and awesome to see two great friends make that commitment. Also, my beer didn’t carbonite in time so I got to drink it myself.
November was really hard. My Uncle Dickey lost his battle with cancer and it has been the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through. I am lucky to have great family & friends around me, not to mention Stacie, who’s been my everything through this all. Dickey was a great friend of mine & I’m just glad he isn’t suffering anymore. My family did get to have a nice Thanksgiving together though & it was fun being at Uncle Larry’s garage that night and getting to see Grandma & Grandpa enjoy themselves some with everyone before they left for a much needed vacation in Texas. November ended on an up note though, when our nephews Hunter & Jackson came to visit.
On my birthday, I went in to work found out that I was no longer a temp, but had been hired so now I have more stability in my job. Also, Joey was in town from Las Vegas and Nick came over from Iowa City to visit for a few days so we had a really good time. Then, back home in Glenwood my family celebrated Christmas and a bunch of the guys got together to play poker. It was fun. On December 22nd I was part of a comedy show here in Des Moines at the Vaudeville Mews that made me really feel like I’m doing the right thing with stand up. I had a blast and got to perform with some of my new great friends.
You know what’s fun? Coming back to Iowa just in time for a University of Iowa journalism professor to write an article in The Atlantic about how shitty and backwards the state is. The article was written by Stephen G. Bloom, whom I knew as the author of Postville: A Clash of…
CAUGHT ON TAPE! PILOT TALKING TO PASSENGERS ABOUT LOUIS C.K.
This is nuts. I was on a flight to my vacation home. Suddenly the pilot gets on the P.A and starts talking about Louis C.K! Luckily I’d been transcribing jokes at the time, so my digital recorder was on. I caught the whole thing!
